Audit what is actually there
Before anything changes we document what exists: what runs where, who has access, what is backed up, and what would happen if each piece stopped. That document is usually the first time anyone has seen the whole picture.
The systems your operation runs on, kept running
Most infrastructure problems are not dramatic. They are a slow network nobody has measured, backups nobody has restored from, and a single person who knows how the whole thing fits together.
The cost lands the day that person is unavailable, or the day the backup turns out not to have been running.
Before anything changes we document what exists: what runs where, who has access, what is backed up, and what would happen if each piece stopped. That document is usually the first time anyone has seen the whole picture.
Priorities come from consequence, not from how easy something is to fix. An untested backup outranks a tidier network diagram every time.
Uptime, error rates and backup completion are watched and alerted on, so the first person who knows about a problem is us rather than a customer of yours.
A backup that has never been restored is a hope. Recovery gets exercised on a schedule, and the result is written down.
Most projects use two or three together.
